Scientists have confirmed one more difference between men and women. Women’s brain is more complex and it works harder so they need to sleep more. The importance of sleeping was explained by a professor of the Sleep Research Centre, Jim Horne.
In his opinion, women who sleep less than have higher risk of developing depression, anger, greater feeling of hostility and high level of psychological distress, and that this is not present at the same levels in men.
He explains the importance of sleeping furthermore. He has even written a book concerning this topic.
He explains more clearly, the reason that people need sleep is so that their brain needs to recover and repair itself. While sleeping, the cortex – which is the part responsible for language, though memory and many other functions, relaxes and recovers.
The amount of sleep you need depends on how much you use your brain during the day. Due to this you need more sleep if you have been more physically active during the daytime. Women are known for doing more activities at the same time and they as we can say overload their brain, and they need more sleep.
As concerning men, we cannot say that every man needs the same amount of sleep, this depends on their job. For example, a man whose job puts a lot of effort on his brain-as decision makin. He also needs more sleep than other men, although maybe not as much as women. This is due to the fact that women’s brains are more complex, so they will always need a little bit more sleep than men. It has been estimated that the difference is about 20 minutes more for women, but this doesn’t apply to every particular man and woman.
Women need more than 8 hours
It is a fact we all know that our body needs at least 8 hours of sleep to rest and to recover energy. Professor Horne distinguished men’s and woman’s brain and states that the women’s brain is wired differently than men’s and is more complex, so women need more sleep.
What makes women’s brain more complex?
Women tend to do multi-tasking and due to this, their brain is uses more energy that needs to be recovered, and the best way to do this is by sleeping.
What happens to Tired Men?
Tired Men are men who have more complex jobs such as decision-making, need more sleep to regain lost energy, but still not as much as women.
Ways to improve your sleep quality
Every person is different regarding sleeping routines, so some of these tips may work for one but not for other.
1. Do not take Stimulating Foods
Some food affects your sleep and you should definitely avoid them. In this group we can put caffeine in coffee, theobromine in cacao or chocolate and sugar. These foods and drinks can often lead to insomnia.
2. Routine sleep
Our brain likes routines, and can quickly get used to a new routine and recognizes it. So try to set up a sleeping routine which your brain will recognize and tell you when it is time to go to sleep. When you do this at the same time every night your brain will get a good night sleep.
Yoga is a discipline that requires amenability, and prepares the body for a good rest. So that is why yoga is recommended for people who suffer from insomnia.
Meditation similarly as yoga requires a calm state of mind which means that sends your brain in a state of deep relaxation. This is required for people, especially for women, because their brain works non-stop.
Melatonin is also used to get a better sleep. 1-3mg before bedtime is the perfect dose for a good night sleep.
