The fragrances that are added to fabric softeners to make them smell great are actually what makes these softeners very harmful.
The numerous chemicals used in their production can enter our skin through the clothes we wear and cause allergies, as well as various health problems. The substances used to give the softeners their amazing smell (Phthalates) can lead to hormonal imbalance. They also cause damage to the environment.
For these reasons, you should stop using fabric softeners, especially when it comes to washing your kids’ clothes. Seek the solution in nature and prepare your own homemade softener.
The ingredients you need to make this softener are:
- 1 cup hot water
- 3 ½ cups apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup baking soda
- 10 drops of essential oil (any kind, for fragrance, optional)
Method of preparation:
There will be a fizzy reaction, so it is best if you have a big plastic container, between 11 and 18 gallons. You can use an empty fabric softener package. Just make sure it is well washed. Pour the water, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda. They will react and produce plenty of bubbles.
Wait for the mixture to settle and transfer into a glass jar with a lid. Add the essential oil, close the lid and shake well. Voila! Your homemade natural clothes softener is ready!
Extra tip: Shake before every use. Add about 4-5 tablespoons of this mixture per wash.
