The FAT Facts: Butter vs Margarine

There are many butter products offered to the customers as alternatives, but are the really healthy? They are not, they always say that margarine is a healthy alternative for butter, but this is only bragging. Butter is much healthier and nothing is better than butter.

You can also find margarine, which is almost identical with butter, and it is hard to make a difference. But do not get fooled by the perfect color and the smell of butter. Margarine is made from a substance which is very unhealthy and it is created from a scientific process – trans fats.

Margarine was first mass-produced in 1903, as an alternative to butter and it was much cheaper. It began with the discovery that vegetable oil can become solid and creamy when hydrogen was added. It soon got very popular because it was actually cheaper to make than butter.

At the beginning, they did not know the influence of trans fats to the health and to the body. But today experts have studied the effect of trans fats and they confirm that there is a big difference in the reaction in the body from unsaturated and saturated fats, and they are both essential for the function of our body.

What is Fat?

For our brain to function properly it needs fats, and the most essential fatty acids such as omega 6 and omega 3 are very important in this process. Also fats are carried all over the body with the help of fat-soluble vitamins and vitamins A, D and E, so that is why they are very important for the body.

But on the other hand, trans fats behave in a distinct manner. This is due to their different structure and they do not aid the body’s function the same way like natural fats. A study from 2008 reveled concerning results – that by just 2% higher the amount of energy from trans fats increases the risk of coronary artery disease by even 23%.

On the other hand, in the 1950’s, butter was considered to be the cause for heart disease due to the content of cholesterol –which is present also in animal fats as well as butter, and was considered not healthy. But later these claims were proved to be wrong because the information from the conducted study were wrongly presented and not mentioned at all, and all the people were informed that heart disease could be caused by a high-fat diet. Today is known that heart disease can appear due to this kind of fat which is consisted in carbohydrates found in sugar and bread.

It is not bad for the health to have increased level of cholesterol and actually increased level of cholesterol is related to a longer life in women.

Now that you know the facts, do not deceive yourself thinking that low fat butter is better for your health. Choose and enjoy the real butter.
