Have you heard the word ‘sciatica’? It refers to leg pain, which manifests as cramps or stabbing pains that can prevent you from moving or even standing!
The pain is worsened even upon minimal efforts and movements like sitting down, coughing or sneezing. In some cases, leg pain develops gradually, whereas in others it occurs suddenly. It is often accompanied by weakness, numbness, and tingling in the foot or leg.
In most severe cases, one is unable to bend or move the toes, foot, or the knee.
Causes of Sciatica
‘Pinched nerves’ are a common cause of sciatica. To be more precise, this happens when lower spinal nerves are pinched, which affects the leg functions.
Other causes include:
-- Another very common cause of sciatica is herniated discs that pressure a nerve root.
-- Piriformis syndrome, when the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock region, spasms and causes pain. This muscle can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve and cause pain in the leg and foot.
-- Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which vertebra, a bone in the back, slides over the bone below it, causing back pain and weakness in the legs.

Extra Remedy -- Ginger
Ginger is known for its health benefits and medicinal properties. This amazing root relieves various types of pains due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. These agents influence the vanilloid receptors in the sensory nerve endings.
The taste of ginger is similar to pepper – slightly burning. It works by affecting the pain sources and tracts, thus neutralizing the inflammation.
A study from the University of Miami has found that the most concentrated forms of ginger -- ginger extracts and essential oils- can replace pharmaceutic anti-inflammatory medications, also known as NSAIDs. In this study, the effect of the ginger extract was compared to the effects of a placebo. It included 250 patients suffering from osteoporosis. The results have shown that the ginger extract was 40% more efficient that the placebo in alleviating the pain!
Another study from the University of California, Los Angeles, has found that ginger combats inflammations at a cellular level. With its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-ulcer properties, this root is highly recommended for arthritis patients.
