More than 97% of the vitamins we are taking contain unhealthy ingredients in them, and you probably did not know that. Big pharmaceutical companies are producing these vitamins. Centrum and many more supplements, for example are produced by Pharma giant Wyeth, and One A Day line, is made by Bayer Health Care, which has aspirin fame. There are many more companies that produce and sell supplements, like GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and Unilever.
But a lot of artificial additives can be found in many popular brands, like imitations of vitamin compounds, chemical colorings, and synthetic flow agents. These artificial additives cannot be recognized by the body and it cannot process them well.
- Synthetic substances can sometimes cause huge damage, if they are taken in big amounts, and they cannot be absorbed very well.
- Many deficiencies caused by synthetic vitamins can be erased by the pills and supplements which are obtained from whole foods.
- A lot of the supplements, mostly the multi-vitamins are obtained from synthetically produced substances and are not for consummation.
- There is some evidence by long term epidemiology that shows that these commonly used multinutritional vitamins are actually not very healthy.
Here are the damaging ingredients found in supplements:
GMO’s in supplements
The GMO’s or Genetically Modified Organisms are added in the vitamin supplements and it is can cause serious problems and it is very surprising fact. You need to know most of the vitamins and supplements we take are full with these genetically modified organisms (GMOs) like petroleum – obtained artificial colors, aluminum, aspartame and many more types of toxic additives that can actually poison our body and are especially harmful for children. GMOs can cause many health problems and they can also kill the gut bacteria.
GMO Fillers (unless listed):
- Corn starch
- GMO fed pork / beef gelatin
- Natural flavouring
- Lactic acid
- Modified food starch (corn)
- Hydrogenated soybean oil
- Soy lecithin
- Whey / egg white protein from GMO fed chickens / cattle
- Citric acid
- Xanthan gum
Here are some other toxic ingredients that you need to avoid:
1. Magnesium Stearate and Stearic Acid
More than 90% of the vitamin supplements contain magnesium stearate. The process of creating magnesium stearate is when a magnesium ion is added to stearic acid. This compound contains lubricating properties, which enables the machinery to work faster and smoother and it also doesn’t allow the capsules and pill to stick to each other, and that is why they add it to the production of supplements.
Immunology published a study which showed the ability of the stearic acid to disable the function of body’s natural killer cells. These so called T-cells can damage the viability and function of the membrane potential and ultimately cells. Another problem that can rise from the use of magnesium stearate is that they use hydrogenated oils like cottonseed oil to obtain the stearate. And the cottonseed can contain a huge amount of pesticide residues even when it is not genetically engineered, which often is.
One study was published by the Cornucopia Institute, which is a very highly-effective food activism group, and in the study it was showed that the presence of carrageenan in food is related to the appearance of gastrointestinal inflammation, and it also causes higher risk of colon cancer in the laboratory animals. And because of the effect that the carrageenan has on the gastrointestinal inflammation, the Cornucopia institute advises all the people with gastrointestinal symptoms like: chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome – IBS and many more; to stop consuming carrageenan and to see if it is actually the cause for these symptoms.
3. Titanium Dioxide
They add titanium dioxide in supplements and vitamins as a pigment. But a study has showed that titanium dioxide together with other metals can be the factor in causing problems with the immune function in the body.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified titanium dioxide as an IARC Group 2 carcinogen and probably carcinogen to humans. This was explained on the website of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety.
The study also proved that by inhalation and intratracheal instillation can lead to respiratory tract cancer in rats by the high amounts and concentration of titanium dioxide dust and pigment-grade (powdered)
4. Silicon Dioxide
The uninformed buyer can consider equivalent weight with bigger quality when the filler can make the bottle heavier than the hope with the use of common sand.
5. Artificial colors
Artificial colors have been the cause for many conditions like cancer to hyperactivity in children. The bad news is that a lot of the commonly used supplements like the Centrum which is a Pfizer-owned brand have a high content of toxic coloring agents like FD&C Red No. 40 Aluminum Lake and FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminum Lake. And these two are potential neurotoxins.
Here are some other fillers that you should avoid
Avoid these fillers in supplements: glaze, yeast extract, acrylamides, potassium Sorbate, laureth sulfate, laurly sulfate, Propylene glycol, Shellac, Crospovidone, Ethylcellulose,HydroxyPropyl Cellulose, (anything with propyl or ethyl), Croscarmellose, Pregelatinized Starch, Talc, povidone, starch (corn), Sodium Starch Glycolate, plasdone products, gums, sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, sorbitol, silica, carnauba wax Methylcellulose.
